‘The last card’

He lay underground 100 years,
listening to their hope and fears.
Empty prayers followed by tears.
Eventually, fate becomes clear.

Bargains offered and deals struck.
Promises made, on faith and luck.
Conditions asked; exceptions made.
In the end, the last card was played.
