‘The small of the back’

Directly behind the heart,
In the small of our backs,
lies an unprotected spot;
One vulnerable to attack.

There is no real defense.
No armor could deflect
when a knife slides in;
soft tissue can’t protect.

In-between those bones
where the real truth lies.
The betrayal of our trust;
this is where hope dies.
